Cole's Biggest Decision in Infamous 2 Could be Between Fire and Ice

If tearing stuff up with the powers of lightning alone wasn't enough for you in Infamous, today is your lucky day. In the latest trailer for Infamous 2, Cole is showing off some new powers, specifically those of fire and ice. Who made this guy a mage? Cone of cold, chain lightning, firebolt; you're dead, son!

Cole will not have all these skills available simultaneously, so takes your dreams back to World of Warcraft. A morality alignment with Kuo -- who represents 'good' -- will place ice powers at your behest. Similarly, an aligninment with Nix -- the 'bad' apple -- grants you fire manipulation. Now the choice between good and evil isn't simply how you're feeling after your day at work, the addition of an extra elemental skill set makes the decision that much tougher.

Extend Your Play Time with User-Created Content for Infamous 2

There's no way around it, Infamous 2 looks like a jolt of fun administered right to your brain in the most unorthodox ways imaginable. Developers Sucker Punch have chosen to omit multiplayer in favor of creating a truly immersive single player tale. Bummer, innit?

Fear not fans of PlayStation 3 exclusives, Infamous 2 is attempting to win you back and keep you playing with the latest announcement of user created content. While it won't be as deep as Little Big Planet 2's user-creation modes (really though, what is?), it will surely be a great way to extend your hours logged as the shocking Mr. MacGrath.

It looks as if user-creation is 'limited' to creating unique missions in various modes with various goals, such as stealth, defense, search and destroy, races, and so on, but that in itself will give creative gamers plenty to work with. Once you've created your masterpiece, throw it on PSN and let the rest of the world suffer through your impossible user-created mission. Really though, why did you have to make it so difficult?

Amped for Infamous 2? Your day is about to get even better with the news that a limited beta will be available to a few lucky gamers to jump in Cole's stylish shoes and drop a beating on some very well deserving individuals. Check back on March 14 for details.

CES11: PlayStation 3 is All About the Headaches

    Prepare to be terminated

After a bit of wandering on the main show floor, we found Sony's huge chunk of real estate. Most of it, like almost every other company on the floor, was dedicated in some way to the tiresome technology that I hope fails miserably, 3D. Still cameras, video cameras, small displays, large displays, everything in 3D! In other words, one massive headache. Amongst all the folks looking cool with their dimension-augmenting shades was the PlayStation 3 section, where we happily set up. Thankfully, Sony's massive 3D screen was calling the attention of everyone within eye-shot, meaning uninterrupted game time.

PlayStation's biggest and most interesting game set up by far was for Move, which featured a few screens dedicated to Killzone 3. Having played the multiplayer beta, I already know that this game is going to be a good one. At CES however, PlayStation wanted to give me a brand spanking new experience by not only putting a Move assault rifle in my hands, but also cranking the Helghass-kicking action out in 3D. Honestly I was a little overwhelmed by the sensory barrage, which I usual love. As a 3D skeptic already, having to deal with the enhanced visuals along with the still-foreign Move and rifle peripheral was too much to get down in under five minutes. Attempting to master the control didn't allow me to fully bask in the 3D, so yet another manufacturers attempt to cram this "new" technology down my throat was wasted. The PS Move controls were very finicky, reacting to the slightest movement of the rifle. The sensitivity may have been a little too high for me, but I eventually got the hang of it.. Right before I ran into a pack of Helghast in an attempt to use the melee function, which along with reloading is cleverly implemented. You aim off-screen and give the rifle a shake to reload, and to melee, you thrust the rifle at your enemy as if you're attacking with a bayonet. These motions were tricky execute without losing your aim or directional bearing, but like most things, a little practice will probably fix that right up. Killzone 3 will release on February 22nd, along with the branded peripheral, which will retail for $40.

Also on display was inFamous 2, another PS3 exclusive that I can't wait to dive into. One of the first things I asked the nearest rep, as I smashed heads with Cole's tuning fork shaped cattle prod, was whether or not the title supported 3D. I was informed that the developers chose to concentrate on intense gameplay and an immersive world rather than 3D bells and whistles. Amen, brotha! Thus I cheerily smashed, shocked, ran, climbed, and slid my way -- headache free -- through inFamous 2's demo level. Those who have been keeping up with the released media should know the segment that was playable; where Cole is in pursuit of a limousine, and ends up being attacked by a chopper. The demo looked good when we saw it way back when, and thankfully, it played just as well in Vegas. Still very excited for this one.

Surprisingly, Sony also showed off a little MLB 11: The Show, the first time I've actually seen it in action. Graphically, it appeared not much had changed from MLB 10: The Show, which was already beautiful looking. The only graphical enhancement was made by way of, you guessed it, 3D! YAY! I was not impressed by MLB 11's 3D at all. In a game like baseball, where depth of field is such a integral part of the experience when the camera is over the pitcher's or catcher's shoulder, the effect left much to be desired. It seemed like the biggest benefactor of the 3D treatment was the scoreboard, which honestly, I could care less if I see or not. I suppose the 'wow moments' would occur during a cinematic scene, like a home run, which in the punishing world of baseball sims does not happen often. A more drastic change has been made to the pitching and hitting mechanics, which can now be fully controlled by the analog sticks. Of course, if that departure is a little too hardcore for the casual baseball gamer, you can always switch back to the button-based method of heaters and whiffs.

Finally, Little Big Planet 2 made a showing. We didn't have a chance to give it a whirl, but it is what it is. If you're a user-creation crackhead, you probably shouldn't even think twice about buying it.

All in all, PlayStation and Sony in general seemed to be relying too much on 3D for cheap thrills. I'm still not sold, nor will I ever be. I jokingly asked a rep standing near a PSP display where the PSP2 was at. "Over near the PlayStation 3 set up," he responded. Either he heard me wrong, or he was incredibly misinformed.

GC10: Is Cole MacGrath's Identity Crisis Finally Over?

The latest trailer for Infamous 2 is a little on the slow side. The camera pans through a frozen shot of a town being ravaged to the timeless sound of House of the Rising Sun; people dying, cars flying, lightning striking. Eventually the pan leads to Cole, not the Raven-haired sack of boredom character design we've seen previously, and not quite the David Beckham clone the last character sketch teased.

The new Cole looks a lot like the old Cole, which at this point I think we should just take and stop complaining about. It's not going to get any better, and I'm tired of writing about it. So fine, I'll deal with it as long as the game looks incredible and plays smoothly. So far so good, but hopefully we'll get a more exciting trailer next time.

Fast As Lightning, Redesigned Cole Emerges

That was fast, Sucker Punch. A little too fast, maybe. The stylistically challenged Infamous 2 developers have released a quick sketch of Cole's new design, which they said wouldn't suck. Now I'm pretty convinced that Sucker Punch needs to fire their character design team and start from scratch. I'm not one for belittling someone's hard work, but honestly, I could probably design a better character.

The proposed new Cole looks eerily similar to the old Cole, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the old Cole didn't look so plain and boring. While I did like his racing jacket/cargo pants/utility bag clothing combo, the Jason Statham face wasn't doing it for me. If this new sketch is any indication, they're sticking with something close to his old duds, instead of the muscle tee and black-and-white-Eddy-Gordo-pants look. They've also modeled his face to look more like David Beckham

What do you guys think, new Cole or old Cole?

Infamous 2's Cole Is Getting a Makeover

OMG you guys, it's make over time! *squeal*

Apparently, the folks at Sucker Punch have their ear to the ground. About three weeks ago, I complained about how silly Cole looks in Infamous 2. Sucker Punch, who develops the Infamous series, must have taken my complaints personally because they're redesigning Cole. Good move Sucker Punch, good move.

Currently, there are no shots of what the redesigned human conduit will end up looking like, but SP reassures us that they're hard at work rebooting the character design to one that doesn't suck. It's kind of refreshing to know that a developer is listening to the complaints of it's customers, and applying fixes so proactively. Kudos, fellas! While we patiently await Cole to emerge from the stylist's chair, here's an uneventful trailer to tide us over, showing Infamous 2's comic style cut scenes.

Infamous 2 Looks Crazy; Cole Looks Dumb

This is new gameplay footage for Infamous 2. Wow! This game looks official. The cinematic gameplay action reminds me of Uncharted, except you know.. Cole can throw lightning bolts. Speaking of Cole, why the redesign guys?! I liked original Cole's style. Leather jacket, sling pack, cargos; all things I would personally wear if I were granted with super powers and was kicking the shit out of baddies across town. It says superhero and anti-hero at the same time! Cole's new style is too bland. He looks like Nathan Drake in gym clothes. Lame.

Enough talk about Cole's fashion faux pas. Enjoy this awesome gameplay footage from the new Infamous. Damn, as if there weren't enough games I haven't played that I should, add the original Infamous to the list. It keeps piling up!
